Yeh Jeevan ( continued -1).

 ( Continued from the previous post)

It is poet Shailendra again for the movie “ Jagte Raho” sung by Mukesh. The poet says “ Zindagi Khwab hai”- Life is a dream. Many of our scriptures also say that this so called life is not a reality but is only a Maya, an illusion, or in other words, a dream.
Zindagi Khwab hai, khwab mein,Jhooth kya,aur bhala Sach hai kya.
(Life is a dream, so, does it matter what is false or what is true ?)

Well, if the life is truly a dream or Maya, should we really worry about whatever we do is good or bad or whether it is Paap or Punya ?
             So he deals it in this way ……
‘ Dil ne humse jo kaha, humne vaisa hi kiya, Phir kabhi fursat se sochenge, bhala  tha ya bura’
(Whatever my heart told me to do ,I did. Was it right or wrong? Let me ponder over it when I have time to spare)
 This song was picturised on and superbly played by the veteran actor Motilal.

This brings me to a song by Poet Indivar's sung by Kishore Kumar bringing up the eternal  question ….
“ Zindagi ka safar, hai yeh kaisa safar, koi samjha nahin, koi janaa nahin.
  Hai yeh kaisi dagar, chalte hain sub magar, koi samjha nahin,koi jana nahin.”
( This journey of life , what kind of journey is it ?, No one is able to grasp it  or understand it.  What sort of path is it, though everyone treads it but (still) no one has understood it?)

“ Zindagi ko bahut pyar humne kiya, maut ko bhi galey se lagayenge hum;
  Rotey rotey zamaney mein aaye magar, hanste hanstey zamanesey jayenge hum”
( I showered a lot of love on my life, I will embrace the Death also with equal vigour ;
I came into this world crying, but will certainly leave it laughingly.)

Could not help remembering Kabir who said “ When you come into this world , you cry but people around you rejoice; Let your deeds be such that when you leave you have a smile on your lips leaving the people around you crying “.

Another gem from the same poet Sahir for the film “ Phir Subah Hogi”(1958).It is once again Mukesh rendering a song taking a dig at the God .

“ Aasman pe hai khuda,aur zameen pe hum; Aaj kal wo is taraf dekhta hai kum”
(God is up above in the sky and I am on ground,of late,he hardly looks this way.)

Then the poet throws a cheeky remark at the God.

“ Jo bhi hai wo theek hai, jikr kyun Karen ; Hum hi sab jahan ki fikr kyun Karen.
  Jab usey hi gam nahin, to kyun hamen ho gam”
(Whatsoever is going on, is alright. Why should I talk about it and keep worrying about it. When He himself doesn’t care about it, why the hell should I?)

  Majrooh Sultanpuri says (from “ Dharam Karam” sung by Mukesh.)

“ Ek din bik jayega, mati ke mol;
Jag mein rah jayenge,pyare tere bol.”
  ( A day will come when you are no more, then your worth will not be more than dust;
  Only thing that will remain is your saying and thoughts).

Here the poet Sahir ( Sahir Ludhianvi) conveys the thoughts of a wanderer in this song from the movie “ Railway Platform’ sung by Rafi.

“ Basti,Basti,parbat parbat gaata jaye banjara, le kar dil ka ektara”
(Banjara, the wanderer, keeps wandering through habitats with a song on his lips  and alongwith his heart as ektara (a single stringed musical instrument)).

“ Pal do pal ka saath hamaara, pal do pal ki yaari;
Aaj nahin to kal karni hai chalne ki tayyari.”
 (We are together as friends but for only this brief moment;
 Today or tomorrow we have to proceed on our final journey)

“ Dhan daulat ke peechhe kyun hai, yeh duniya deevani;
  Yahaan ki daulat ,yahin rahegi,saath nahin hai jaani.”
 (Why is the world so mad after the riches? After all, all the wealth acquired here will continue to remain here, cannot go with us.).

  1. Enjoyed reading this post. Evokes memories of the lovely songs of Mukesh, Rafi and Kishore, the golden trio of hindi film music. Most of the music, I listened was on the radio.
