Appeal to Justice Verma Committee

Respected Sir,

This is with reference to the suggestions being invited on the amendment of laws on safety and security of women. It is truly a very vast field to be covered and I am sure you will receive good suggestions on the usual aspects.

I wish to cover only two small aspects which might not be touched upon by the others.

1.      Role of Media /TV/Advertisements:-  A large percentage of youth in our country are not gainfully employed .The main pastime  for  them is watching  TV Channels and movies. And what do we have here? Item numbers in movies (mostly not relevant to the storyline-inserted because producers feel people ‘want’ it),advertisements showing women as an object of desire, scantily dressed young girls of tender age trained to dance with provocative and indecent gestures, molestation scenes with “innovative” variations, woman shown using various beauty products as if their sole aim is to ‘hook’ men. All this goes into the psyche of youth who will tend to treat women as ‘commodity’ and not a human being.

Can we make laws stringent enough to curb such acts?

2.      During the recent mass public demonstrations, one of the leaders claimed that more than 200 of our MPs have criminal cases (including rape) against them. If true, this means that more than 30% of peoples’ representatives have rape cases against them. What message is this giving to the people at large? If you are powerful, you can get away with anything, even rape.
Therefore, my appeal is that all such cases should be tried in fast track courts and settled in maximum 90 days. Those found guilty should be suitably punished apart from losing their right to represent people forever! This will send out a strong message to the general public about “Zero Tolerance” in rape cases.

I earnestly hope this committee will do a commendable job of suggesting suitable guidelines and will earn the respect and gratitude of the people.

  2. As a liberal I am fundamentally opposed to any form of censorship. I think the problem lies rather with our puritanical attitudes of sexual repression. And we've become a two track society - the one richer, educated, liberal, global in outlook and embracing change in cultural and social norms; the other less well off, ill-educated, narrow minded, stuck in an old-world culture of repression and misogynistic denial of liberties and rights of individuals. And these two worlds clash, sometime violently.
